We intentionally moved beyond his rogues gallery. For example, we took him out of Gotham and put him in different environments, like outer space or under the sea. It's opened up so many unique storytelling possibilities and freed us from the normal constraints that you typically have on Batman. We decided to take a new approach, one that hasn't been done before. These darker incarnations, like the recent movies and Batman: The Animated Series, have done it so well that it's a tough act to follow. The last Batman series was anime noir, and the last film was dark, dark, dark. Can't we all just get along? We shall see. And it works on many levels, with Easter eggs for the adults and well-meaning fun for the kids. For now, The Brave and the Bold is all Batman nuts have to work with. Evidently, the hunger for violence and noir has not abated among the Bat's faithful, so following that act with a brightly colored cartoon with its heart and head in a less gruesome place may prove to have been a curious follow-up.īut the verdict isn't in yet. After all, the Batman faithful are on a serious high after the murderous carnival of The Dark Knight. This might have been an inopportune time to do that.
